Classic gemmy yellow prismatic crystals of topaz to 1.0 cm in size on matrix with warts. Minimal damage present, this still in good condition. Very choice German classic, this comes with an antique label as shown at the end of the video. This label is an original acquisition date in 1907.

The Schneckenstein crag, located in the Vogtlandkreis region of western Saxony, Germany, is a globally famous geological monument and the preeminent historical European locality for gem-quality, wine-yellow topaz. Geologically, this unique 23-meter-high rock outcrop is the erosional remnant of a chimney-shaped breccia pipe composed of contact-metamorphosed Ordovician phyllites that were shattered and cemented by quartz, tourmaline, and abundant topaz during the intrusion of the nearby Eibenstock tourmaline granite pluton approximately 320 million years ago. Hydrothermal fluids rich in fluorine saturated the volcanic breccia, allowing topaz to precipitate into open cavities as sharp, highly lustrous, tabular crystals that historically served as the definitive hardness reference material for grade 8 on the Mohs scale. Historically, while the outcropping topaz crystals were recognized as early as 1535, formal gemstone mining and localized quarrying commenced in 1727 under the direction of Christian Kraut before King Augustus the Strong purchased the claims, renaming the underground and surface works the Koenigskrone (Kings Crown) mine. The operations reached an intense golden era of productivity between 1728 and 1750, supplying thousands of flawless gems, popularly dubbed Saxon diamonds, to the royal courts of Europe, including the Green Vault in Dresden and the British royal crown jewelry, before declining yields and localized depletion forced the permanent termination of all professional mining in 1797. Through 2026, the remaining rock structure is strictly protected as a national geosite and natural monument, making original eighteenth-century Schneckenstein topaz specimens irreplaceable historical treasures coveted by world-class museums for their rare central European heritage and geometric perfection.
