Tremolite

specimen number:
1605104

location:
Harcourt, Ontario, Canada

description:
A cluster of lustrous green tremolite crystals from this classic locality. In very good condition.

Harcourt, a small community located in the municipality of Highlands East within Haliburton County, Ontario, sits within the Grenville Province of the Canadian Shield, a region famed for its complex Proterozoic metasedimentary and plutonic rocks. Geologically, the area is characterized by ancient Grenville marbles, gneisses, and skarn zones that underwent intense regional metamorphism and high-temperature fluid activity over a billion years ago, creating ideal environments for rare-element and silicate crystallization. Mineralogically, Harcourt is well known among collectors for producing notable specimens of amphibole group minerals, particularly attractive green crystals of chrome tremolite formed within the altered carbonate rocks. While the surrounding region has a long history of small-scale prospecting, graphite mining, and mineral collecting dating back to the early 20th century, Harcourt remains celebrated today as a classic Canadian locality for fine silicate and skarn mineral specimens.
