The Selleck Road locality, situated near West Pierrepont in St. Lawrence County, New York, is a classic and highly celebrated mineral specimen site famous for producing exceptional crystals of uvite tourmaline and tremolite. Geologically, the site is positioned within the Central Metasedimentary Belt of the Grenville Province, a region dominated by Precambrian-aged metamorphic rocks. The mineralization is hosted within the highly deformed, coarsely crystalline Grenville Marble, where regional metamorphism and localized hydrothermal activity rich in fluorine and boron facilitated the growth of large, exceptionally well-formed, dark green to nearly black uvite tourmaline prisms and lustrous, dark brown hexagonal prisms of tremolite. The history of the Selleck Road site is defined entirely by independent, low-impact surface prospecting and specialized manual trenching for collector specimens rather than commercial metal or industrial stone quarrying. Discovered and popularized by local field collectors in the mid-20th century, the site saw its most intensive, systematic digging from the 1970s through the 1990s as mineral clubs and independent claim holders opened shallow trenches along the road cuts and surrounding private woodlands, with occasional seasonal surface collecting continuing by permission into the 2020s.
