The Kuran Wa Munjan District in Badakhshan Province, Afghanistan, is home to the legendary Sar-e-Sang lapis lazuli mining complex, which boasts an active extraction history spanning over 6,000 years since the early Bronze Age and remains operational today on a seasonal basis. Geologically, the area is situated within the high-altitude Hindu Kush mountains, where ancient Neo-Archean to Paleoproterozoic metamorphic rocks, including high-grade marbles and calcareous sequences of the South Badakhshan Block, have undergone complex retrograde metamorphism and metasomatism. These processes produced world-famous gemstone-bearing veins dominated by deep-blue lazurite alongside intimate associations of calcite, dolomite, pyrite flecks, and diverse silicate minerals.
