Discovered in 1990 during the driving of an underground mine gallery by the state-run Lovozero Mining Company, the localized pegmatite pocket was intensively documented and sampled by geologists throughout the 1990s as a byproduct of the primary industrial mining for rare metals like niobium, tantalum, and zirconium. Ussingite is a rare sodium aluminum silicate mineral that occurs as a primary constituent within the core of the Shkatulka pegmatite body. Geologically, it forms under highly specific hyper-alkaline, low-temperature hydrothermal conditions where late-stage residual fluids become severely enriched in sodium and depleted in calcium. The mineral belongs to the triclinic crystal system and is typically found at this locality in massive, fine-grained aggregates or dense cleavable blocks displaying a distinctive pale pink, violet, or deep lilac coloration. In the Shkatulka body, ussingite serves as the essential matrix rock for a vast suite of subsequent, highly complex ultra-agpaitic minerals, making specimens from this underground exposure critical for studying extreme alkali-magma evolutio
