Vayrynenite

specimen number:
2133355

location:
Shengus, Roundu, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan

description:

A loose sharply formed lustrous gemmy crystal of this rare mineral. In great condition.

The Shengus area, situated along the Indus River valley in the Gilgit District of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, is a prominent locality for artisanal underground mining and quarrying targeting complex granitic pegmatites. Geologically, these late-Cenozoic pegmatite dikes intrude the high-grade metamorphic rocks of the Nanga Parbat-Haramosh Massif, which experienced intense crustal thickening and heating during the ongoing collision between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. Magmatic differentiation of these highly volatile, boron and lithium-rich fluids formed zoned pegmatites with pocket-bearing core zones containing exceptional gemstone and mineral species. Small-scale, localized mining operations began in earnest during the late 1980s and early 1990s, utilizing primitive blasting and manual hand-tool excavation along hazardous cliff faces. These unregulated, independent mining activities have continued to operate seasonally through recent years, driven primarily by the global commercial demand for fine mineral specimens and facet-grade gemstones.

Vayrynenite is an exceedingly rare beryllium manganese phosphate mineral that occurs as a late-stage hydrothermal phase within the central replacement pockets of the Shengus pegmatites. The mineral forms under highly specific geochemical conditions requiring an enrichment of beryllium, manganese, and phosphorus, coupled with a strict absence of significant iron. It crystallizes in the monoclinic system, typically occurring at this locality as small, elongated prismatic crystals or cleavable masses that display a characteristic salmon-pink, rose-red, or vibrant orange-pink coloration. At Shengus, vayrynenite is found associated with microcline, albite, muscovite, quartz, and various beryl or tourmaline group minerals, and the site remains one of the world's premier sources for transparent, facet-grade crystals of this species.
