Vivianite

specimen number:
2102470

location:
Clear Springs Mine, Bartow, Florida, USA

description:

An excellent rare locality example for the species, transparent green crystals of vivianite to 3.0 cm in size are set up on matrix. This is in great condition. There are numerous old labels that come with the piece as shown at the end of the video.

The Clear Springs Mine, located near Bartow in Polk County, Florida, is part of the extensive Central Florida Phosphate District, which has a long history of industrial surface mining dedicated to extracting phosphate rock for agricultural fertilizers. Geologically, the region's deposits are situated within the Miocene-aged Hawthorn Group, consisting of marine sediments, clays, and sands where phosphatic pebble and bone beds accumulated in shallow shelf environments. During commercial earthmoving operations, fossilized bones and organic remains frequently interact with groundwaters rich in iron and phosphorus. This chemical environment occasionally produces striking mineral specimens, including flattened clusters of bladed, deep blue-to-black vivianite crystals formed within fossil cavities.
