The Boulby Mine, located near Yorkshire on the northeast coast of England, is a deep underground facility with a modern history spanning oil exploration in the mid-twentieth century to major commercial production of potash, rock salt, and polyhalite. Geologically, the mine is situated within the Permian-aged Zechstein Evaporite Cycle, a sequence formed by the repeated evaporation of an ancient epicontinental sea. The resulting strata feature massive beds of halite, sylvinite, and associated evaporite minerals. In addition to its industrial output, the mine has gained significant recognition among mineral collectors and researchers for producing rare borate minerals, most notably high-quality, transparent platy crystals of volkovskite often found in association with hilgardite.
