description: Dug Hill near Avant in Garland County, Arkansas, is a classic American locality known for its wavellite, with collecting activity dating back to the late 19th century and continuing into the early 20th century when the material became widely distributed to collectors. The geology of the area consists of novaculite and related sedimentary rocks that were fractured and later mineralized by phosphate rich fluids. Wavellite formed in these fractures and cavities as radiating hemispherical aggregates of green to yellow green crystals, often creating attractive spherical clusters on matrix. Much of the material was recovered through small scale quarrying and hand collecting, rather than large scale mining.
Classic specimen from Arkansas radiating green lustrous crystal groupings of wavellite measuring to almost 2.5 cm in diameter across the front of matrix. In super condition. Normally these are broken open, this one shows all crystal groupings intact. The quality is outstanding. Previous label from the collection of Louis Lafayette included.
