Bleiberg in Carinthia, Austria, is a historic lead and zinc mining district that was worked for several centuries before closing in the late 20th century. The deposits occur in carbonate rocks and are part of a Mississippi Valley type system that produced large amounts of galena and sphalerite. In the oxidized zones of the deposit, a variety of secondary minerals formed. Bleiberg is the type locality for wulfenite, which occurs there as thin tabular crystals typically yellow to orange in color, and specimens from the district are valued for their crystal form and classic association with this well known European locality.
