specimen number:
2057065
location:
Red Cloud Mine, La Paz Co., Arizona, USA
description: Lustrous orange red tabular crystals of wulfenite to 1.4 cm on edge set on matrix from the Red Cloud Mine, La Paz County, Arizona, in good condition with just slight chipping on the backside of one crystal. The crystals display the classic thin tabular habit and vivid coloration that have made this locality world famous, with sharp edges and bright luster creating strong visual impact. Wulfenite is a lead molybdate that forms in the oxidation zones of lead deposits, often as thin plates with exceptional color. The Red Cloud Mine is one of the most celebrated wulfenite localities in the United States, known since the late 19th century for producing striking orange to red crystals of remarkable form and quality. Specimens from this small but prolific Arizona mine are highly sought after and remain benchmarks for the species.
