Butte, Montana, is one of the most important historic mining districts in the United States, developed in the late 1800s for rich copper, silver, and zinc deposits. The Leonard Mine was one of the major underground mines in the district and later became part of the Berkeley Pit operations. The complex hydrothermal veins of Butte produced a wide variety of minerals. Wurtzite, a zinc sulfide mineral, occurs at Butte as dark brown to black crystals and masses, often associated with sphalerite, pyrite, and other sulfides.
