Leksvik, situated on the Fosen Peninsula in Trondelag, Norway, is home to a notable quarry renowned for its high-quality deposits of thulite, the pink variety of the mineral zoisite. Geologically, the thulite occurs within metamorphic rocks where hydrothermal fluids rich in manganese interacted with calcium-aluminum silicates during the Caledonian orogeny. This infusion of manganese is what gives the mineral its distinctive and vibrant rose-pink to deep raspberry-red coloration. The thulite at Leksvik is typically found in massive form or as dense crystalline aggregates embedded within white quartz or greyish schist, often creating a striking visual contrast. Historically, this site has been a significant source of Norway's national stone, with the material being extracted for use in jewelry, carvings, and decorative lapidary work. While the quarry is primarily a source for ornamental stone rather than individual crystal specimens, it remains a critically important locality for understanding the distribution of manganese-bearing silicates in the Scandinavian crust.
