The Qalat Payeen (also spelled Qalat-e Pa'in) salt dome, located in the Bandar Abbas County of Hormozgan Province, Iran, is a remarkable geological feature within the Fars Zone of the Zagros fold-and-thrust belt. Geologically, it is part of the Hormuz Formation, a complex sequence of evaporites, volcanic rocks, and sedimentary blocks that diapirically rose through younger strata during the Neogene. This locality is internationally famous for producing some of the world's finest specimens of zunyite, a rare aluminum silicate-fluoride-chloride mineral that occurs as sharp, lustrous, tetrahedral crystals typically found in a brick-red or grayish-brown matrix of hematite-rich soil and salt. Historically, while the salt domes of the Persian Gulf have been utilized for local salt quarrying for centuries, specific mineralogical interest and formal mining for zunyite specimens at Qalat Payeen gained significant momentum in the early 2000s. There are no major industrial metallic mining operations at this specific site; instead, it remains a focal point for geological research and specimen recovery due to the unique high-pressure, low-temperature metamorphic environment provided by the salt diapirism. As of 2026, Qalat Payeen continues to be the primary global source for high-quality zunyite crystals, providing essential data for understanding the complex geochemistry of the Hormuz salt domes.
