description: Andersonite is a rare sodium calcium uranyl carbonate mineral that is prized by collectors for its spectacular physical properties. Geologically, it forms as a secondary mineral crust, typically deposited by evaporating groundwater on the walls of underground uranium mines within sandstone-hosted deposits. The mineral is most famous for its intense, vivid neon-green fluorescence under short-wave ultraviolet light, which is among the brightest in the mineral kingdom. Historically, it was first described in 1948 from specimens found at the Hillside Mine in Yavapai County, Arizona, and has since been identified in other notable uranium districts such as those in Utah and New Mexico. Because it is highly water-soluble, andersonite is chemically unstable in humid environments and can actually dissolve if not kept in a dry, controlled setting.
Yellow green crystalline and massive on matrix. Good reference quality example for the species.
