The Filon Roc Soufrat is a notable mineralized vein within the historic Salsigne mining district located in the Aude department of Languedoc-Roussillon, France. Geologically, the area is situated in the southern part of the Massif Central within the Montagne Noire, where Paleozoic metamorphic and sedimentary sequences have been intensely deformed by complex thrust faulting and multiple hydrothermal events associated with Variscan tectonics. Mineralogically, the Salsigne deposit is world-famous for its complex gold-bearing sulfide ores, yielding massive quantities of arsenopyrite, pyrite, and associated bismuth, silver, and copper minerals. Historically, mining in the district dates back to Roman times for iron and copper, but industrial scale gold and arsenic extraction at Salsigne began in the late 19th century following discoveries by local operators, evolving into Western Europe's premier gold producer before operations ultimately ceased in the early 21st century.
