The Trepca mining complex, situated near Kosovska Mitrovica in the Stari Trg district, is a vast mineralized system historically recognized as one of the largest lead-zinc producers in Europe. Geologically, the deposit is a world-class polymetallic skarn and carbonate-replacement system localized within deeply faulted Paleozoic limestones, marbles, and schists that were intruded by Oligocene to Miocene-age volcanic complexes. Hydrothermal fluids channeled through these regional fault structures replaced the carbonate host rocks, creating massive sulfide bodies composed of argentiferous galena, sphalerite, pyrrhotite, and chalcopyrite within extensive open vugs that also yielded world-famous crystals of calcite, dolomite, and quartz. Historically, mining in the region dates back to Roman times and experienced a major revival under the medieval Serbian kingdom in the fourteenth century, but modern industrial underground operations began in 1927 when the British company Selection Trust formed Trepca Mines Limited and commenced commercial production at the Stari Trg shaft in 1930. The state-owned complex expanded massively after World War II under Yugoslav administration, incorporating numerous interconnected mines, concentration plants, and smelters that operated continuously until ethnic conflicts and geopolitical instability in the late 1990s caused severe structural damage and a collapse in production. Following extensive United Nations and local structural stabilization efforts in the early 2000s, limited underground extraction of lead and zinc ores resumed under reorganized management and continues on a scaled-back operational basis through 2026.
