The Huanggang mines, located in Hexigten Banner, Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia, China, comprise a massive iron-tin polymetallic deposit famous for producing exceptional specimens of hedenbergite, andradite garnet, fluorite, and ilvaite. Geologically, the area is a classic skarn deposit formed by the intrusion of Late Yesteryear Mesozoic granitic magmas into Permian limestone and marble formations. High-temperature hydrothermal fluids reacting with the carbonate host rocks created extensive skarn zones containing rich mineralization within large replacement pockets and cavities. Commercial development and massive open-pit and underground mining operations began around 2008 under the management of the Inner Mongolia Huanggang Mining Company. While the enterprise operates primarily as a large-scale industrial producer of iron and tin concentrates, processing thousands of tons of ore daily, the site has continuously supplied the international mineral market with significant quantities of highly sought-after display specimens throughout its ongoing operations into the 2020s.
