The Banat Mountains in Caras-Severin County, Romania, are a historically significant mining region with records of metal extraction dating back to ancient Roman times and experiencing major revivals during the Habsburg monarchy. Geologically, the area is characterized by complex skarn deposits formed at the contact zones between Cretaceous limestones and Late Cretaceous to Paleogene intrusive banatitic magmatic rocks. These contact metamorphic and hydrothermal processes created diverse mineral assemblages containing copper, iron, and other base metals. The oxidized zones and cavities within these skarns are well known among mineral collectors for producing fine specimens of azurite, a blue copper carbonate mineral formed through the alteration of primary copper sulfides by carbonate-bearing groundwater.
