Barite
specimen number:
1052784
location:
Baia Sprie, Maramures Co., Romania
description: The Baia Sprie mining district, located in the Maramures region of northern Romania, is a highly significant mineral locality famous for its complex hydrothermal vein deposits. Geologically, the area is situated along the Neogene volcanic arc of the Carpathian Mountains, where intense volcanic and tectonic activity created a massive system of base-metal and precious-metal veins hosted within andesitic and dacitic volcanic rocks. These veins are filled with an extensive suite of primary sulfide minerals, including galena, sphalerite, and chalcopyrite, alongside diverse secondary minerals. Documented mining at Baia Sprie dates back to at least the fourteenth century, with formal operations expanding significantly under Austro-Hungarian administration throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Industrial mining reached its peak during the twentieth century under state ownership, producing substantial quantities of lead, zinc, copper, silver, and gold until uneconomic conditions and environmental closures forced the permanent shutdown of primary mining operations around 2006.
Lustrous blue bladed crystals of barite forming a matrix less cluster. Some cleaving present as seen.
