Barite
specimen number:
2292340
location:
Cavnic, Maramures Co., Romania
description: The town of Cavnic, situated in Maramures County, Romania, lies within the Baia Mare metallogenic district of the Gutai Mountains. Geologically, this area is defined by Neogene volcanic activity, where a calc-alkaline volcanic chain developed along the Carpathian Belt. Hydrothermal fluids circulating through faulted conduits in the volcanic and sedimentary host rocks formed a complex, low-sulfidation epithermal system. This process created numerous parallel, mineral-rich veins containing lead, zinc, copper, silver, and gold ores. Historically, mining activity in the region dates back to Roman times, with official written records first documenting the settlement in 1336. Over the centuries, the mines evolved from medieval operations targeting silver and gold to industrial-scale polymetallic extraction under Austro-Hungarian and later Romanian administrations. While commercial mining operations ceased permanently in 2005, the locality remains highly famous in mineralogy for producing diverse, aesthetic specimens, and it serves as the type locality for the mineral rhodochrosite.
Lustrous thin bladed crystals of barite in a cluster without matrix. In good condition with very minimal cleaving present. Classic material for this locality.
