A matching geode pair lined with sparkling crystals of quartz. These are hosting pale yellow tabular crystals of barite and crystals of dolomite. In good condition.

The geodes from the Harrodsburg area in Indiana are found primarily within the Harrodsburg Limestone and adjacent formations of Mississippian age, dating back over 350 million years. Geologically, these hollow mineral nodules formed when groundwater circulated through the carbonate host rock, dissolving fossil fragments or nodules and creating cavities that were subsequently filled by inward-growing layers of chalcedony and quartz. Historically, amateur collectors and mineralogists have explored the creek beds and road cuts of the region since the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, drawn to the abundance of these spherical rocks. When cracked open, the geodes reveal stunning interior cavities lined with sparkling quartz crystals, dolomite, calcite, pyrite, and barite.
