Fine old combination specimen from this famous locality. Sprays of metallic stibnite are on matrix with colorless tabular gemmy crystals of barite measuring to 2.0 cm in size. Very minimal damage present. The specimen comes with an antique label as shown at the end of the video and dates to the very early 20th century.

The mining district of Baia Sprie, located in Maramures County, Romania, has a rich history of mineral extraction spanning over seven centuries. Historically, the town and its mines were widely known by the Hungarian name Felsobanya, reflecting the region's long-standing cultural and political ties to the Kingdom of Hungary. Large-scale mining was formally documented as early as the 14th century, focusing on the recovery of gold, silver, lead, copper, and zinc. Geologically, the deposit is situated within the Neogene volcanic arc of the Carpathian Mountains. The ore bodies consist of complex hydrothermal vein systems hosted in andesitic and dacitic volcanic rocks. These veins were formed by volcanic activity that circulated mineral-rich fluids through fractures in the earth's crust. Baia Sprie is world-famous among mineralogists as the type locality for several rare species and for producing exceptional specimens of stibnite, barite, and various sulfosalts. Although industrial-scale mining operations largely ceased in the early 21st century, Felsobanya remains a legendary name in geological literature due to the remarkable diversity and quality of the minerals found within its subterranean passages.
