Bastnasite-Ce

specimen number:
2133240

location:
Red Cloud Mine, Lincoln Co., New Mexico, USA

description:
Rich masses and partial crystals throughout matrix.

The Red Cloud Mine, situated in the Gallinas Mountains of Lincoln County, New Mexico, is a historically significant locality known for its complex polymetallic mineralization. Geologically, the deposit is classified as an alkalic-type epithermal system where mineral-rich fluids associated with Tertiary-aged laccoliths deposited ores within brecciated sandstones and limestones. The mine is notable among mineralogists for its variety of species, including bastnasite, fluorite, barite, and various copper minerals. Historically, the Red Cloud and the adjacent Deadwood Mine were active primarily between the late 1800s and the 1920s, with a focus on lead, copper, and silver extraction. While commercial metal production was sporadic and relatively small in scale compared to larger districts, the site saw renewed interest in the mid-20th century for rare earth elements and fluorite.
