Calcite

specimen number:
1052355

location:
Joplin, Missouri, USA

description:
A large golden yellow to slightly purplish lustrous scalenohedral crystal of calcite. This is in super condition. The specimen dates to the early 20th century, if not the late 19th century. The specimen comes with an antique label as shown at the end of the video. A real American classic.

Early mining in Joplin, Missouri began in the 1870s after the discovery of rich lead and zinc deposits in what became known as the Tri State Mining District of Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma. Prospectors first worked shallow surface diggings and small shafts that followed ore bodies containing galena and sphalerite hosted in limestone. As development continued, larger underground mines were established and the district became one of the worlds leading sources of zinc and lead during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The rapid growth of mining transformed Joplin into an important industrial center supported by smelters, railroads, and mining related businesses.
