The Stoneco Portage Quarry, located in Wood County, Ohio, is situated in the Findlay Arch region and operates within the Middle Devonian-age Dundee Limestone and Lucas Formation. These sedimentary layers were deposited in a shallow, ancient sea, resulting in massive beds of carbonate rock that are highly valued for construction aggregate. The history of the site is defined by long-term industrial quarrying that exposed these deep limestone horizons. Geologically, the quarry is recognized for its vugs and solution cavities, which formed as acidic groundwater moved through the permeable rock. These voids served as depositional environments for various secondary minerals, making the site a notable locality for mineral collectors who have historically recovered specimens of celestine, fluorite, calcite, and minor amounts of pyrite and marcasite from the carbonate matrix.
