Cerussite

specimen number:
2102464

location:
9 level, Jersey Vein, Bunker Hill Mine, Kellogg, Idaho, USA

description:

Glassy gemmy twinned crystals of cerussite measuring to 2.2 cm in size coming off matrix. From the front this is in super condition, slight damage present on the back only. From the early 1980s, this is very good for the species and classic locality.

The 9 Level of the Jersey Vein at the historic Bunker Hill Mine in Kellogg, Idaho, is internationally celebrated for producing some of the finest mineral specimens in the world. Geologically situated within the prolific Coeur d'Alene mining district, the deposit is hosted in Precambrian metasedimentary rocks of the Revett and St. Regis formations, cut by complex fault and fracture systems. Oxidation zones along specific segments of the Jersey Vein interacted with lead-bearing solutions to form localized pockets of pyromorphite. While the broader mine operated primarily for silver, lead, and zinc extraction over more than a century, stopes along the 9 Level yielded legendary, highly lustrous crystals of pyromorphite in vibrant shades of green and orange. The area also produced outstanding twinned cerussite crystals, along with anglesite.
