Cerussite

specimen number:
2102468

location:
9 level, Jersey Vein, Bunker Hill Mine, Kellogg, Idaho, USA

description:

Glassy gemmy twinned crystals of cerussite throughout both sides of matrix. Typical of this material slight damage is present. This one still in good condition and very choice for the species at this famous locality. Collected in the very early 1980s.

The 9 level of the Bunker Hill Mine in Kellogg, Idaho, accessed via the historic Kellogg Tunnel, represents a primary focal point within the world-class Coeur d'Alene mining district. Geologically, the deposit is hosted within the Precambrian Revett Quartzite, where complex hydrothermal activity formed major fault-controlled and link vein systems. The Jersey Vein on this level consists primarily of galena with associated base metal sulfides. Deep circulation of meteoric waters and oxidation processes along these structures historically created rich secondary mineral zones, making the 9 level famous among mineral collectors for yielding striking, highly sought-after specimens of bright green pyromorphite.
