Chalcopyrite with Sphalerite, Quartz
specimen number:
1052322
location:
Baia Sprie, Maramures Co., Romania
description:
Large semi lustrous sharp crystals of chalcopyrite measuring to 1.5 cm in size across the top of a crystallized quartz matrix with sphalerite. In good condition. The specimen comes with an antique label as shown at the end of the video and would date to the very early 20th century. Mining at Felsobanya, now known as Baia Sprie in Romania, dates back to the Middle Ages when the area became an important center for gold and silver production in the Carpathian region. The district hosts hydrothermal vein deposits cutting volcanic rocks and yielded ores of gold, silver, lead, zinc, and copper that were worked by underground methods for centuries. Under Austro Hungarian administration the mines were further developed and became well known for both metal output and fine mineral specimens. Although large scale mining declined in the late 20th century, Felsobanya remains a classic European mining locality recognized for its rich history and diverse mineralization.
