Childrenite

specimen number:
1052809

location:
Ehrenfriedersdorf, Saxony, Germany

description:
Interesting locality example for the species with small grains of childrenite on a quartz matrix. The specimen comes with an antique label as shown at the end of the video. This label gives an acquisition date in 1911.

The Ehrenfriedersdorf mining district, situated in the central Erzgebirge region of Saxony, Germany, is a historic mining center primarily exploited for tin and silver. Geologically, the deposit is tied to a late variscan granite intrusion that forced hydrothermal fluids into the overlying Paleozoic metamorphic schists and gneisses, forming a dense network of steep greisen veins and stockworks. These structures are richly mineralized with cassiterite and arsenopyrite, alongside a varied suite of accessory minerals including fluorite, apatite, and topaz found within open vein cavities. Localized tin panning and primitive surface extraction began around the early thirteenth century, with underground mining accelerating in the fourteenth century as deep adits were driven to follow the high-grade tin lodes. Industrial operations peaked during the sixteenth century, faced numerous interruptions during regional conflicts, and underwent major modernization in the mid-twentieth century under the state-owned SDAG Wismut and later VEB Zinnerz operations, which systematically extracted tin until economic non-viability following German reunification forced the permanent closure of the mines in 1990.
