Childrenite

specimen number:
1605100

location:
Linopolis, Divino das Laranjeiras, Minas Gerais, Brazil

description:
A cluster of sharply formed childrenite crystals. Very good thumbnail for the species, in great condition.

Linopolis, a rural district within the municipality of Divino das Laranjeiras in Minas Gerais, Brazil, is a renowned locality within the Eastern Brazilian Pegmatite Province. Geologically, the area is characterized by complex granitic pegmatites emplaced during the Neoproterozoic Era as part of the regional Aracuai Orogeny, forming volatile-rich pockets that foster rare-element crystallization. Historically, artisanal and commercial mining operations, known locally as garimpos, developed across the region to extract gemstones and rare phosphate minerals. Mineralogically, Linopolis is particularly famous for producing exceptional specimens of childrenite, an uncommon hydrated iron aluminum phosphate that forms striking, highly lustrous, yellowish-brown to amber crystals in association with other secondary pegmatite phosphates.
