The Quincy Mine, located near Hancock in Houghton County, Michigan, is one of the most historic copper-producing operations in the Keweenaw Peninsula, with mining activities beginning in 1846 and operating continuously for over a century until its closure in 1945. Known historically as Old Reliable for its consistent dividend payouts, the mine operated some of the deepest underground shafts in the world and pioneered advanced steam-powered mining technology, including the famous Quincy Smelter and monumental hoist engines. Geologically, the mine exploits the native copper deposits of the Keweenawan rift system, where copper mineralization occurs primarily as native metal filling the amygdaloidal tops of ancient basalt lava flows or traversing cross-cutting conglomerate beds within the Jacobsville and Portage Lake volcanic series.
