The Navidad Mine, located in the Rodeo municipality of Durango, Mexico, is situated within a region characterized by Tertiary-aged volcanic rhyolite. The primary mineral deposit consists of a large, massive fluorite vein system that spans several miles in length. Hydrothermal activity allowed fluorine-bearing solutions to interact with the volcanic host rock, precipitating fluorite alongside secondary minerals like creedite, a calcium aluminum sulfate halide. Historically operated as an industrial fluorite mine, the locality gained international attention in the mid-2000s when miners breached pockets containing orange creedite. These specimens, which typically form spherical, radiating aggregates of spiky crystals, owe their distinct orange coloration to fine clay inclusions that were trapped during the crystallization process.
