The Quincy Mine, located in Houghton County on Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula, was founded in 1846 and operated until 1945. Geologically, the site sits within Precambrian basalt lava flows and amygdaloid zones of the Pewabic Lode, where hydrothermal fluids deposited native copper, native silver, and associated secondary minerals like prehnite. Historically known as Old Reliable, the operation achieved major economic importance by shifting to large-scale amygdaloid mining and eventually engineering the world's longest mine shaft at Number 2, which reached a depth of over nine thousand feet to extract immense wealth during the industrialization era.
