location:
Azkarate Quarry, Eugui, Navarra, Spain
description: The Azkarate Quarry (Cantera Azcarate), located in Eugui within the Esteribar valley of Navarra, Spain, is an active industrial magnesite mining operation that has been operating since the mid-20th century (commercial extraction in the Eugui district largely developed in the 1960s and continues today alongside sister cuts like Asturreta and Lavasar). Geologically, the deposit is hosted within Paleozoic carbonate sequences, specifically massive hydrothermal-metasomatic replacement bodies where hot magnesium-rich solutions altered original limestone and dolostone strata to form high-grade magnesite. The quarry is globally renowned among mineral collectors for producing world-class crystal specimens, particularly sharp, twinned rhombohedral dolomite crystals, magnesite, and various rare secondary phosphate species developed within cavities and fractures.
A grouping of lustrous twinned mostly gemmy colorless dolomite crystals coming aesthetically off matrix. A superb miniature for this Spanish classic.
