specimen number:
2133114

location:
Foote Mine, King Mtn., North Carolina, USA

description:
Slightly translucent purple crystals of fluorapatite measuring to just under 1.0 cm in size on matrix. Nice example for the species from this famous locality. In good condition.

The Foote Mine in Kings Mountain, North Carolina, is a historic lithium pegmatite deposit that was discovered in the late 19th century and became one of the most important lithium sources in the United States. Mining expanded during the mid 20th century as demand for lithium increased, and the mine produced large quantities of spodumene and other lithium minerals. The deposit consists of complex granitic pegmatites that also yielded a wide variety of mineral specimens. Operations declined in the late 20th century and the mine eventually closed, but it remains a significant locality in the history of American lithium mining.
