The Navidad Mine, located near the town of Rodeo in the state of Durango, Mexico, is a world-famous locality primarily known for its exceptional specimens of pink fluorite and creedite. Geologically, the deposit is of hydrothermal origin, where mineral-rich solutions deposited crystals within cavities and fractures of volcanic rocks, specifically rhyolite and tuff. These formations occurred during the Tertiary period as a result of regional volcanic activity that created the ideal geochemical conditions for rare mineral assemblages. Historically, while the region has a long history of prospecting, the most significant period of specimen production at the Navidad Mine occurred during the early to mid-2000s, with a major peak in the discovery of world-class creedite "balls" and translucent pink fluorite octahedrons around 2004 to 2008. The mine has been worked both for industrial fluorite and specifically for the mineral specimen market, making it a staple locality in modern mineralogy. Unlike many traditional metal mines in Durango, the Navidad Mine is celebrated more for its aesthetic crystalline treasures than for large-scale ore production.
