Fluorite

specimen number:
2072360

location:
Rogerley Mine, Weardale, England, UK

description:
A large matrix plate covered by lustrous gemmy green cubic crystals of fluorite measuring to 1.8 cm on edge. In good condition with minimal damage present. Incredibly fluorescent.

The Rogerley Mine, located near Stanhope in Weardale, County Durham, England, is a world-famous locality situated within a disused 19th-century limestone quarry known as Rogerley Quarry. Geologically, the mineralization consists of Mississippi Valley-Type (MVT) deposits where hydrothermal fluids formed mineralized flats and pockets within the Carboniferous Great Limestone. The mine is legendary for its vibrant green fluorite crystals, which are highly prized for their intense daylight fluorescence, shifting to a strong purple color under natural UV light. These crystals typically exhibit a cubic habit, often with penetration twinning, and are frequently found on a matrix of galena or quartz. Historically, the site operated as a commercial limestone quarry from the mid-1800s until around 1947, but its modern era as a dedicated specimen mine began in the early 1970s. Significant systematic mining for minerals was conducted by various groups, most notably UK Mining Ventures from 1999 until the mid-2010s. As of 2026, the Rogerley Mine remains an iconic name in mineralogy, recognized for producing some of the most reactive and aesthetically striking green fluorite specimens in the world.
