The Moscona mine, located in the Siero municipality within the Asturias region of northern Spain, is a notable underground mine widely celebrated for producing world-class mineral specimens of intense yellow fluorite alongside calcite, dolomite, and barite. Geologically, the deposit is part of the Villabona-Arlos fluorite district, where stratabound and vein-type mineralization occurred during Mesozoic extension, trapping low-temperature hydrothermal fluids that precipitated minerals within Permo-Triassic carbonates, sandstones, and breccias. Large-scale mechanized underground mining began at the site in the late 1970s under the corporate management of Fluoruros S.A. to extract industrial-grade fluorite for the metallurgical and chemical sectors. The mine maintained continuous operations for several decades, utilizing modern room-and-pillar extraction methods, until changing market conditions and the depletion of economic ore bodies led to the permanent cessation of commercial mining activities in the early 2000s.
