The Xiayang Mine, located in Yongchun County within the Fujian Province of China, is a significant lead-zinc-silver deposit that has become famous for its exceptional fluorite specimens. Geologically, the deposit is a hydrothermal vein system hosted within Mesozoic volcanic and sedimentary rocks, where mineral-rich fluids filled structural fractures and cavities. The fluorite from this locality is highly prized for its deep purple to violet color, often occurring as sharp, transparent cubic crystals that frequently exhibit complex stepped-growth faces or "phantom" internal zoning. These crystals are most commonly found in aesthetic association with white quartz, which provides a stark contrast to the dark purple fluorite. Historically, while the region has a long history of small-scale mining, modern mechanized operations focused on base metals expanded significantly in the late 20th century. The mine gained international recognition in the mineral world during the 2000s and 2010s as world-class purple fluorite pockets were encountered during routine ore extraction. Today, the Xiayang Mine remains an active industrial site and a premier source for high-quality Chinese fluorite specimens valued for their intense color and geometric perfection.
