Saxony, located in eastern Germany, boasts a rich mining history dating back to the 12th century, particularly centered around the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge). Significant silver mining began around 1168 near Freiberg, transforming the region into a major European mining powerhouse. Production later expanded to include cobalt, bismuth, uranium, and various rare minerals.
