Fluorite with Calcite

specimen number:
9505280

location:
Huanggang Mines, Keshiketeng Co., Chifeng, Inner Mongolia, China

description:

A gorgeous deep pink to red translucent semi lustrous large octahedral fluorite crystal. Colorless bladed crystals of calcite present on several sides. In absolutely perfect condition all around. This from the now famous finds in 2020.

The Huanggang mining district, located within the Hexigten Banner of Chifeng City in Inner Mongolia, China, is a massive, world-class iron-tin skarn deposit that became internationally famous around 2020 for producing spectacular, highly sought-after specimens of vibrant pink octahedrally modified fluorite. Geologically, this complex polymetallic deposit formed during the Yanshanian Orogeny when late Mesozoic-age granitic magmas intruded Permian sedimentary and volcanic host sequences, triggering intense contact metamorphism and metasomatism. This process created extensive skarn zones rich in magnetite, cassiterite, and calcium-silicate minerals, where late-stage, low-temperature hydrothermal fluids cooling within open fractures allowed rare, pristine pink fluorite crystals to form, with their unique pink coloration caused by natural, radiation-induced color centers involving rare-earth element impurities trapped within the calcium fluoride lattice. Historically, large-scale industrial mining at the Huanggang complex began in 1959 with initial exploration, followed by formal, high-capacity underground shaft and open-pit development starting in 2003 under the management of the Inner Mongolia Huanggang Mining Company. The specific, highly celebrated pockets of sharp pink fluorite were breached by miners during routine underground operations between 2018 and 2021, creating a massive wave in the global mineral market before those localized pockets were fully extracted. Through 2026, active industrial operations at the Huanggang complex continue to focus heavily on core iron and tin production, while the specific pink fluorite specimens recovered around 2020 remain highly coveted, modern benchmarks of contemporary Chinese mineralogy.
