location:
Alston Moor, Cumbria, England, UK
description: Alston Moor, located in the North Pennines of Cumbria, England, is a historic upland region renowned for its rich metalliferous mining heritage. Mining activity dates back to Roman times and medieval periods, with large-scale industrial extraction peaking during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries under operators like the London Lead Company, producing vast quantities of lead and zinc. Geologically, the area forms a central part of the North Pennine Orefield, where lower Carboniferous Yoredale cyclothems--alternating sequences of limestone, sandstone, and shale--are cut by a complex network of mineralized faults and hydrothermal vein systems. Mineralogically, the region is famous for its diverse gangue and ore assemblages, producing exceptional specimens of fluorite, baryte, witherite, and various lead and zinc secondary minerals that have made it a classic locality for mineral collectors worldwide.
crystallized semi lustrous galena and siderite covering the top of a thin matrix. Minor chalcopyrite present. This is in good condition.
