Lustrous cubic crystals of galena measuring to 1.5 cm in size across the top of matrix with small red crystals of sphalerite. In good condition with minimal micro-chipping present. A good North American classic.

Mining in Joplin, Missouri, began in the mid 1800s after the discovery of rich lead and zinc deposits in the Tri State Mining District. The area quickly developed into one of the most important lead and zinc producing regions in the United States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Ore was found in shallow deposits within limestone and was mined from numerous small shafts and later larger operations. The district produced large amounts of galena and sphalerite along with associated minerals. Mining declined by the mid 20th century, but Joplin remains historically important for its role in the development of the American lead and zinc industry.
