Bright lustrous cubic crystals of galena to 1.1 cm on edge set on a reddish the black sphalerite crystal matrix. Some cleaving is present to the sphalerite along the backside of the piece, this still in good condition. The specimen comes with a previous data card as shown at the end of the video.

Cherokee County, Kansas, forms the western portion of the legendary Tri-State District, a world-class lead-zinc mining province that encompasses parts of Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. Geologically, the deposits are classified as Mississippi Valley-type (MVT) ores, where metal-bearing hydrothermal fluids migrated through porous Mississippian-age limestones and cherts, precipitating massive quantities of galena and sphalerite within brecciated zones and solution cavities. These ores are famously associated with spectacular crystals of marcasite, pyrite, and translucent "amber" or "ruby" sphalerite, often hosted in a characteristic gray chert known as "chert-rock" or "jasperoid." Historically, mining and underground quarrying in Cherokee County began in 1870 with the discovery of lead near Galena, Kansas, which sparked a massive influx of prospectors and the development of major camps including Baxter Springs and Treece. The district reached its zenith of production during World War I and remained a global leader in zinc and lead output through the mid-20th century, providing essential raw materials for the industrialization of the United States. Following the gradual depletion of high-grade ores and the implementation of environmental regulations, the last large-scale commercial operations in the Kansas portion of the district ceased in 1970.
