The Hakansboda mining district, located in the Strassa region of Ramsberg parish, Orebro County, Sweden, was a notable historic producer of copper, cobalt, and arsenic ores. Geologically, the deposit is situated within the Paleoproterozoic-age Bergslagen ore province and is characterized by stratabound, skarn-hosted polymetallic mineralization. Ascending hydrothermal fluids replaced carbonate-rich horizons within metavolcanic and metasedimentary sequences, depositing dense lenses of chalcopyrite, cobaltite, and arsenopyrite, heavily intergrown with magnetite, pyrite, fluorite, and secondary bismuth minerals within a silicate-carbonate gangue. Historically, surface quarrying and underground exploration for copper began during the late Middle Ages, with formal mining activities expanding significantly during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries under Swedish royal mining charters. The mines underwent an industrial modernization during the mid-nineteenth century, specifically targeting rich cobalt zones to supply industrial pigment factories, with peak commercial extractions occurring between 1850 and 1870. Due to structural complexities in the deeper ore bodies, low metal concentrations, and the availability of cheaper foreign copper and cobalt imports, large-scale industrial operations steadily contracted, leading to the permanent cessation of all commercial corporate mining at the Hakansboda property in 1873.
