Goethite

specimen number:
2102439

location:
Lavrion, Attica, Greece

description:
A thin iridescent plate of goethite. Complete all around.

The Lavrion mining district, situated at the southern tip of the Attica Peninsula in Greece, is an ancient mineral locality renowned for its complex silver, lead, and zinc deposits. Geologically, the area is characterized by the Attico-Cycladic metamorphic complex, featuring alternating layers of marbles and schists that have been intruded by late Miocene granitic rocks. Mineralization occurs primarily as limestone replacement deposits, skarns, and hydrothermal veins along contact zones, yielding rich concentrations of galena, sphalerite, and a diverse suite of secondary copper and lead minerals. Silver and lead mining at the site dates back to the third millennium BC, becoming the primary economic driver of ancient Athens during the fifth century BC, when intensive slave-labor operations extracted thousands of tons of ore from underground galleries. Ancient operations collapsed around the first century BC, but industrial activity was revived in 1864 by French and Greek mining companies, which processed both fresh ore and ancient slag heaps for lead, zinc, and silver until the final closure of the commercial mines in 1989.
