A cluster of sharp crystals of what were once pyrite, these now replaced by brown goethite. The crystals are set on a small amount of hematite rich matrix. In great condition. The specimen comes with an antique label as shown at the end of the video. Nice for this European classic.

The island of Elba, located off the coast of Tuscany, Italy, has a storied mining history dating back over two thousand years to the Etruscans and Romans, who heavily exploited its massive iron ore deposits. Geologically, the mineralization is tied to complex late Miocene magmatic intrusions and hydrothermal activity associated with the Apennine orogeny, which interacted with Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. Mineralogically, Elba is world-famous for producing magnificent, highly lustrous cubic and pyritohedral pyrite crystals, particularly from mines like Rio Marina. Furthermore, the island is the classic and preeminent global locality for goethite pseudomorphs after pyrite, where weathering and hydrothermal alteration completely replaced the original iron sulfide crystals with iron oxides while meticulously preserving their sharp, pristine crystal forms.
