The majority of gold deposits in Zimbabwe are hosted within Archaean greenstone belts of the Zimbabwe Craton, which date back between 2.6 and 3.5 billion years. These ancient volcano-sedimentary sequences were deformed and intruded by granitic rocks, creating pathways for hydrothermal fluids that deposited gold primarily in shear zones, quartz veins, and banded iron formations. Historically, indigenous African societies mined these outcropping deposits extensively starting around the eleventh century, developing a flourishing regional trade network that helped support the rise of the Kingdom of Great Zimbabwe. Portuguese traders engaged with local miners for gold in the seventeenth century, and accounts of this regional mineral wealth later motivated European colonization and the arrival of the British South Africa Company in 1890. Today, thousands of these historical pre-colonial diggings remain key sites for both modern commercial operations and widespread small-scale or artisanal mining throughout the country.
