Gold (14.46g)

specimen number:
2262131

location:
California, USA

description:
An attractive bright lustrous gold nugget that weighs 14.46 g. This has a clasp attached at one and for jewelry use.

Gold nuggets in California are most famously associated with the Mother Lode belt, a prolific mineralized zone extending along the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Geologically, these native gold masses originated in hydrothermal quartz veins formed during the late Jurassic and Cretaceous periods as tectonic plates collided, forcing gold-bearing fluids into crustal fractures. Over millions of years, erosion liberated the gold from its hard-rock matrix, allowing the dense metal to accumulate in ancient and modern riverbeds as placer deposits. Historically, the systematic mining and quarrying of these nuggets began with the discovery at Sutter's Mill in January 1848, sparking the California Gold Rush. This era saw a transition from simple panning to intensive hydraulic mining and dredging, with the most significant period of production occurring between 1849 and the late 1850s. While large-scale industrial gold mining in the state declined following the Sawyer Decision of 1884 and the closure of most operations by 1942 due to wartime mandates, small-scale prospecting continues to this day.
